you've harped on this (so to speak) before, and i just heard a classic
example of this. i was listening to an acoustic jorma kaukonen
(of hot tuna/jefferson airplane fame) show from the mid 80's or so.
now, jorma plays a really fine acoustic fingerstyle guitar, very intricate.
halfway through the show, he was joined by a harp player whose name i
don't recall. this guy just stepped all over the music. he played too loud,
too much, never seemed to take a breath. you could hardly hear
jorma play, and he filled all the soloing space with harp. as i listened,
i found myself getting *really* irritated by this guy. and i'm a harp
fanatic, so i can imagine what "normal" people would think.
i've got shows of jorma/tuna with john sebastian on harp, and they're
great. john plays tastefully, and the harp fits into and enhances the
music. it's a conversation, not a competition.
