RE: [Harp-L] Robert Klein
From: "Laughton, Bob" <LaughtonB@xxxxxxxxx>
Just looked at a Robert Klein CD (U.S.A. comedian) listed on eBay, and
remembering that he was a pretty good harp player.
I remember many years ago seeing him do a number on the telly (was it Sat
Nite Live?) wearing a bandana on his head, fronting a little band. He was
playing riffs and keeping time jerking his right knee emphatically. After a
couple of choruses, he pulled his deadpan mug up to the mike and started
the vocal:
"I cayn't... stop... mah leg..."
Robert Klein developed a whole routine in the early 1970s using the
harmonica, which he did on the Tonight show and other popular TV programs of
the day. I remember one bit where he was talking about how hospitals could
use harmonicas put in their patients' mouth. After jokes involving him
gasping and sputtering through a harp, the big punchline was that, if the
pateints died, they would expire with their last breathe on a nice
harmonious major chord! Hilarious!
I heard an interview with Robert Klein yesterday on PBS and he was talking
about a new CD he had coming out of his classic material. I immediately
thought of that skit and hoped it was on it.
