Ok, this week its Klezmer on the diatonic (that's it, I'm all done plugging now). I saw this band (Shtreiml) live at an outdoor concert at the Montreal Jazz Festival and just got the name of the artist which I had forgotten. He's from Israel and is now living in Montreal (our luck!). The show was to say the least amazing.

Jason Rosenblatt is the harmonicist.

There are great clips at this page:

(Joe do not go to this site, you are depressed enough as it is)

I already know about Jason and he is ANOTHER reason for my depression 8:( (along with Mark "bird" Stafford).

At a glance, the 2 following tracks of the 2002 CD are extremely 'colorful'
- alte Sher
- Novi Sacz
- Gasni - HEY! that a Charlie Parker lick, did he steal it from a traditional Klezmer song!!!

I think SO. One could do a lot worse than absorb some Klezmer. I used to try a lot of the clarinet stuff. Back in 52, when I was living in Trieste, I used to bring in the Eastern European music on the short-wave. Unfortunately, if you're not born into this kind of music, you have a hard time picking up on it. There is a morose, laconic under tone to it, and I suppose a certain amount of suffering went into it. (Similar to blues). I have always thought that ANYONE can have the blues (rich, poor, black, white, oriental, unknown, male, female, unknown, Jewish, Presbeterian, Hindu, Easter Islander?, unknown, etc.

(note video clips seem to take several minutes to download (with no sign that it is downloading) on my cable modem line but the audio tracks download quickly)

Pierre.

PS: I'm not sure, but Chris Michalek may be mis-estimating the number of harpers who can play overblow style well. He said 'a handful' and there are IMO at least 3 in Canada (Pascal, Jason and Calos Del Junco) and the US are 10 times bigger than Canada. Where are they all hiding?

I think because Chris is "one in a million", one in a million would be a safe estimate. Hmmmm, maybe that means there are 1,100 just in China alone. OK, OK, I take that back. :) but maybe it's a very BIG hand.

Last plug - honest: Perhaps SPAH should visit Montreal one of these days.

Excellent adventure, I'm holding 2,034.50 in Canadian CHANGE. My suitcase would be heavy, but I'm ready to pack. Naturally, I wouldn't have to bring any harps with me. So, I'll just listen (and learn).
