[Harp-L] Bird's Break (was/is Tunisia)
This thread is intriguing. ( I'm noodling with the tune on an A minor
(dorian) tuned 1/2 valved CX-12.)
Bret really perked up my ears -
"But I have heard Pierre Beauregard
play "Tunisia" on a prototype Magic harmonica (on a phone message he
left me about 3 years ago),and he DID play Bird's break before he went
into an extended improv."
Wow.
Thomas Owens in his book, "Bebop, the Music and its Players" characterizes
Parker's break:
"Next Parker plays a four measure solo break that is as stunning as any in
recorded jazz. It is an unbroken stream of sixteenth notes-twelve notes per
second for five seconds straight..."
There's a coupla triplets in there as well, so we're talkin' 62 notes in
five seconds (at Parker's tempo of 180).
Is there a recording of Mr. Beauregard playing that break? Can anybody else
out there pull this off?
