Damn, that guy Hammer in Tel Aviv sure sounds a lot harsher than people out
here on the west coast.
My band, doghouse riley, loves to have people come up and sit in, usually in
the last sets. We've had great impromptu musical moments...isn't that what
this is all about? I talked to Charlie Musselwhite recently, who recalled the
days in Chicago, when waiters, bartenders, housewives would get up with the
likes of Little Walter and Muddy...and they'd all have a blast....That's how
musselwhite got started himself...jamming with the masters...
Speaking of which, not long ago Carlos Santana asked me to jam with him...and
I asked my friend whether he thought I should do it....are you THAT good, my
friend asked....
well, hell no, I said. He's Carlos Santana. No one is THAT good..
That said, Carlos regularly has people get up with him...he's a master...and
he blissfully shares his love of music with people of all talent levels...and
i suspect all play better than their best, just sharing the muse with a master
like that.
I think that player in Israel ought to loosen up...He's missing some great
opportunities to make music...not just entertain an audience with the same rigid
stuff...This is the blues...it's not las vegas....
