Hi Ray,
I used a clone of this amp last week, while my Concert was in the shop
(a Santa Ana, made by a friend of mine Marc Goebels some years ago).
Mine has just one rectifier so it is not exactly a clone of the two
rectifier originals (really more like the tweed Super but with two
12s, 40 watts ). It does have two alnico Weber speakers. What I found
is that it likes my TC electronic preamp a lot (rolling off the highs,
pumping up the bass) and also the Shure 540 as both of these together
take advantage of the bigger bottom that the 12s can give. I also went
with a 12au7 in the first position and a 12at7 in the driver. It was
sounding kind of bright previous time I used it with my astatic
ceramic,, no preamp. It sounds great with chromatic, too with this
setup. I wonder if two ceramics might be a good way to go also, not
C12N but a pair of C12Q or something like that ( I had a 1950s alnico
pair, but they needed reconing so I didn't get to try them out).
Don't know if this helps but it's something, I guess. I am about to
purge the collection of some of the big amps I have (too embarrassing
to admit particulars right now, especially with another Bassman on the
way in) , and this one was on the list to go as it didn't sound too
good last time, but with these changes I might keep it around. I do
need to get rid of some stuff, maybe in a few weeks when school is out.
