Update on my once-a-week, 5-week harmonica class:
I did take 13 students (grades 5 thru10) right into second position without
any explanation at all. By week 3, we identified those who could play a
single note. They became "leads." The remainder became "rhythm," playing a
full-mouth chord 1-2-3-4 draw draw, blow blow, etc. Over this groove we got
leads to play a draw sequence: 4, 3, 2.
It's a simple pattern, but sounds good and involves some good basic
techniques. Leads are using hand vibrato, too. Best of all, they like it!
(My Principal told me with a grin that he expected a performance from us!)
Surprising bonus:
A third of the class has discovered low draw bends! When ever I hear one, I
encourage it. We are using Johnson harps.
