You could always record direct to your PC.

For something portable, I use this:  http://neurosaudio.com/
You can get them as low as $99.

It records wav and mp3 at various bitrates, and can do playback
by broadcasting to a nearby radio.

Note that wav will give much better quality than mp3, though
at larger file size.
