RE: playing harp as a kid (was: Howard Levy in the school system)

Good to hear that those kids got inspired!

Here in Holland, I'm starting an initiative for (first) musical lessons
to children between 9-12 years. My intention is to have 30-minute
workshops, in a series of 5. I'm thinking of using the Hohner Speedy
(the one with just 4 holes, complete C-scale, wide-spaced, nice
colours). I would love to receive any similar experiences, tips,
etcetera. I'm especially interested in the methodical part: what do you
teach them? I'm not out to turn these kids into Little Little Walters,
bending and tongueblocking harp-maniacs, etcetera. It's their first
experience with playing music and playing together, so it should be fun
and a natural startingpoint for their exploring musical instruments (and
yes, if they choose the harp that would be great.). Also: the follow-up
"forming their own harmonica ensemble" is a great idea! Any other ideas?

Onderwerp: howard levy in the school system

At Elmwood Elementary School, children were so inspired by the harmonica
playing of Howard Levy that 20 of them started their own harmonica
ensemble.

Levy, who helped arrange for harmonica donations, will be coming back to
the school later this year to check on the pupils' progress, Terry said.
