it is designed and made by the company's owner, who for
some strange reason would like to make a living doing this.
he's got fixed costs for all the effort, time, and expense of
getting to the point where he can sell it.  and he's got to make
enough to cover those costs, when he's not likely to sell
very many of them.  maybe he'd sell more at lower cost,
maybe not.  that's his call, and he's got to live with the
consequences.

bottom line:  if you don't think it's worth $300, don't buy one.
