World Championships--where to start?

Hey Folks--
 
How does one qualify for the world championships?
 
I am assuming that there are a number of feeder competitions.  Where are they and what are the rules?
 
In no way do I feel qualified to do this yet as a player, just wondering.  I've done quite a number of Yahoo and Google searches and have come up with nothing useful.
 
Anything close to Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh?
