The study of Counterpoint is just one step, of one method,  on the road to 
becoming a competent musician or composer.
There are many basic primers out there for a few Bucks which give the 
basics.   Best place is a local music shop which serves schools..
Robert's explanation is about all you can do to teach someone without 
sitting with them or spending hours writing emails and correcting and 
explaining.   Listening to the music or looking at examples gives the feel 
but not the detailed accuracy needed to write... especially if it is a 
first effort!!!
