Today, i'm asking about the Hohner Big River. Been reading some decent
things about it. The price isn't too bad, online anyway...they want $18
for them here in town.
Hello Bryan,
If you're a beginner my advice would be to stay away from the Big River.
New players have a tough time getting single notes out of this harp due to
the recessed reedplated, leakiness, etc.... On the other hand, if you're
into the Chicago sound and you eventually get to the point where you're
playing wide open chords, octaves, slaps, and so forth, the BR can have a
big, almost violent, sound when cupped properly and played through a decent
tube amp.
If you're like 99% of the newbies out there, who usually play too hard, go
with a Lee Oskar. Once you learn to back off a bit you can graduate to
Special 20's which, in my opinion, are the best stock harmonicas out there.
Cheers
Mark
