Hi Dave:
Well you lost me on the "oddly tuned semi-valved 12 holed deals", but I hope
I do bring some soul to it.
"So pucker on, or tongue block, or do 5th position overblows with oddly
tuned semi-valved 12-hole whatsisdealiebobs, whatever, just blow with soul!
-Dave"
......I sent this to Tom: "
....Thanks, Tom -- but then, that should be right up my alley! And if Sonny
Terry's "pucker" playing can still be considered "brilliant", why then do I
really need to learn tongue-blocking (given that I've been playing my own old
made-up way for more years than I really want to admit to here)? I've
always been able to duplicate anything I hear (with a few added flourishes) but
confess I know next to nothing about the other techniques involved in
harmonica playing. I just play and try to make it sound as good as possible. Now
that I've begun writing my own music on keyboard and feeling ready to
translate it to harmonica and also given my newly rediscovered obsession with
harmonicas and everything that entails, I do suspect I'm going to have to learn
some of these other techniques in order to be taken seriously, so I guess I've
rambled on enough to answer my own question. But why does it seem so much
like hard work? -- groan..... that's for Dave too, lol. "

It's clear I have much to learn and these couple of days here have already
been exceedingly educational. My only gripe is with the "cool hat' bit.
What vision immediately sprung to mind was Bruce Willis in his little pork-pie
jobbie with the obligatory shades. I could get into wearing the sunglasses,
but allow hat hair? In Public??? Never! The only hat ever looked right
on me was cowboy style, and with my luck it'd fall off, I'd then trip on it
(some of us are born klutzes) and either break my harpmonica (I like that
designation, Dave) or some equally important part of my anatomy. Perhaps I'd best
stick to hiding behind long hair and shades.
