Roger Boyce Sez :

Excerpt.

" Joining in on the Butterfield exchange. I have been playing amplified
harp now for at least 40 years. My first and biggest influence was the
estimable Paul Butterfield. However I do credit Tony Little Sun
Glover's early harp instructional book for getting me started. "

Roger :

You sure took me back a few years when I read your comment of Tony Glover and his instruction book . When did you get your copy ? I got mine in the late 60's . Your post got me thinking back to those years bringing back really funny memories of just how much I learned from that exercise . It made a night and day difference when I started to take up the harp really seriously . There are some great books out there nowadays , but when it comes down to it , Tony's book is still a great book to learn from even if it's over 40 years old ( oo that smarted to write ) .

Talk about a simple as it can be explained no fluff or B.S. straight from the gut N heart lesson book . When I was through reading it cover to cover , it left me with wanting to go back and re read it over again and again because the knowledge I gained from reading and studying that book was sooooo coooool . What questions I had were answered in how a harp in cross position ( yeah that's what we called it then and still ) related to the I IV Vb changes of Blues , Country western , Rock & Pop and even some Classical stuff as well . I still think it is what set the standard in diatonic harmonica playing instruction books , if not the first it was a close second . I found my copy not to long ago and it still had the sales receipt inside the front cover page . I don't know if it is in publication presently , it should be mandatory reading for every aspiring entry level diatonic harp player . All the publications compared to Tony's book at that time we not addressing cross harp playing at all for the diatonic man .

Nice to see you have been at it 40 years Roger , my respects to you my friend congratz-N-keep on keepin on man ! In a few weeks I celebrate 50 and seems like it was not so long ago I was looking at my Marine Band and wondering , " How do you figure this note lay out ? . How do those Blues & Country Western harp players hit those missing notes ? " I keep hearing ? Again thanks Tony Glover to the rescue .

Tony Glover's book gave me light in a dark musical place when I had tunnel vision .

Here's to Tony , I hope he's still blowin , and thanks Roger for bringing up Tony's book , you know full well the strength of that book since your still at it with the solid foundation it helped you to develop over the years , this I know because it helped me to get my foundation in cross harp and such .

To the other " older " guys here who have similar time on the harp :

¿ How many of you guys learned ( ¿ or are in the process ? ) something off Tony Glover's book ?

Sincerely :

Hurricane Ramón
