RE: [Harp-L] controlled magnetic mic elements (was Harp-L Digest, Vol 12, Issue 30)

Yes, one must be careful buying things like this on E-Bay.
I bought an Astatic T-3 on E-Bay, which said it was in "working
condition". When I got the mic, I opened it up and found that it had
a Shure R7 salt crystal element, but I couldn't test it, because
the cable connector is rare, and not included. Fortunately, Fritz
Hasenpusch was able to help me out with the right connector. When I made
the cable, and was finally able to hook up the mic, I found that the
crystal element was bad. It has almost no output, and makes a
horrific loud hum. Now I have to spend more money on a new element,
so basically, all I got for my money on E-bay, was a mic shell.
Live and learn.

How can ya tell if they are in working condition before ya buy. I assume any
such elements have never been used in a mic?
I have a 15 year old Astatic JT-30 mic that never had much volume to it
when plugged into an amp, therefore i hardly ever used it. Any help in this
dept.?
Lastly, if i take the JT30 mic apart, how can i tell what kind of element
it is? If it's a crappy element, maybe i could use a Shure Bros. C M element
in it?
