I like 2nd for the blues scale, 3rd for Dorian, and 5th for natural minor. Also
5th position gives you the relative minor of 2nd position. So if you start with
the 2nd position root, but play 5th position notes you get the major pentatonic
scale, very useful for Irish music and some Allman Brothers tunes (and
everything Jerry played in Live Dead).

First position is real nice for rock and roll because you change keys sometimes
going into a bridge or a chorus.Usually you go up to the subdominant chord
(like from C to F). You play the main section in 2nd position, play the bridge
in 1st. Sounds nice.

You choose the position based on the notes you need to play and the notes you
need to bend.
