Funny you should ask. I just finished replacing a reed and gapping it.
Gapping is an individual thing. I need my reeds to respond very
quickly so I gap them very very low. A little less than a reed's
thinkness above the reedplate. What works for me may not work for
you...
For burnishing I usually use a tool I made from an old reedplate. I
couldn't find it tonight so I just used a penny. One or two swipes
with the penny along the slot worked for me. I've been doing this
for awhile so it's like being able to measure a teaspoon of salt by
using a pinch...
It's pretty simple. I don't bother with curving or profiliing unless
the reed is completely whacked to begin with and I have no other
choice. Overburnishing can be a problem so go slow.
