[Harp-L] playing live
Here's a couple of things I figured out this month playing live:
It's easy to space out. I wait for my turn to solo, find myself daydreaming,
then suddenly have to shift into overdrive. Makes for interesting solos.
High octaves really cut through a loud drummer and distorted guitar.
Little Wing works pretty good in 5th position. Fifth position is actually pretty
easy. I've always been a little nervous about straying from 2nd.
Major pentatonic scale works well for some Country Western (like Me and my
Uncle). Technically it's second position (to play the key of G you use a C
harp) but you're playing the same notes you would in 5th position. Just start
on the G not the E. G maj pentatonic=G A B D E In tab these notes will work-
1D 2B 2D 3B 3 Dbb 3D 4D 5B 6B 6D 7D 8D 8B 9B. Note the 9B can be a blow bend
giving you the sharp 7th.
House of the Rising Sun sounds good in 3rd position but also sounds good in
natural minor. I'm getting up the nerve to do a live harp switch.
The band should never set up so the guitarist is right next to the keg.
