In the last phase of Miles Davis' career, he would listen to recorded solos from his live gigs or studio jams, find some interesting ideas in them, and have them transcribed as a basis for a new composition. The resulting composition would then take on a new life of its own.
What a great way to craft your music. I'm sure the same has been done (or could be done) w/harmonica instrumentals, such as a "Juke".
