R: Basic Chords

Hi,

=20

this is the translation of a reply I gave to a very similar question, =
posted
on an Italian harmonica forum (www.doctorharp.it).=20

There are not many chords in their "minimal and official" form (root, =
third
and fifth) on a standard tuned harmonica.
Just to mention the more often used chords:
- - Any three adjacent blown holes gives a major chord in the harp key (C
major on a C harmonica, D major on a D harmonica, ...)
- - Drawing on holes 1/2/3 or 2/3/4 or 1/2/3/4 gives a major chord a =
fifth
above the harmonica key (G major on a C harmonica, A major on a D =
harmonica,
...). If you add the fifth hole draw you=92ll get a dominant seven chord =
(G7,
A7, ...)
- - Drawing on holes 4/5/6 gives a minor chord a second above the =
harmonica
key (D minor on a C harmonica, E minor on a D harmonica, ...).=20

Then you move from the full fledged chords to their children, the =
"double
stop" from violin theory, which are subsets of the full chords. For
instance, blowing on 1/2 or 4/5 or 7/8 you get a double stop which can =
be
used as a minor chord a sixth above the harmonica key (A minor on a C
harmonica, B minor on a D harmonica, ...). Or, blowing on 2/3 or 5/6 or =
8/9
you get a double stop which can be used as a minor chord a third above =
the
harmonica key (E minor on a C harmonica, F# minor on a D harmonica, =
...). Or
again, drawing on 5/6 you get a double stop which can be used as a major
chord a fourth above the harmonica key (F major on a C harmonica, G =
major on
a D harmonica, ...).=20

You have a further possibility using the tongue to clock the sound on =
some
hole, but blowing or drawing in more than one non-adjacent holes. For
instance, drawing on 4/7 you get a double stop which can be used as a =
minor
chord a seventh above the harmonica key (B minor on a C harmonica, C# =
minor
on a D harmonica, ...).=20

HTH,

ciao,=20

Claudio
