I sat in Norton's "circle" at the Friday teach-in and thought he was
articulate and passionate about his playing. I especially liked the
way he described himself as a musician and harmonica player, and how
much he disliked being catagorized by type of instrument or style or
any of the other "boxes" people tried to put him in. I also liked
his description of learning to sight read music for other instruments
but not for harmonica. He told a story about being in a studio
session in Japan and unable to read his scored harmonica part -- a
fact he could not communicate to his hosts because of language
barriers. They finally looked at him and smiled and said, "Okay, ad
rib".
His performance on Saturday night was wonderful. First he
demonstrated his virtuosity at the chromatic harmonica, then tore the
place down with some mean diatonic work, and closed with a good old-
fashioned blues.
I'm still trying to remember how I managed to miss his Saturday
seminar. I'm sure I have a good excuse, I just can't remember what
it is...
