Steve, the Space Animals effects expert says you have to practice your
effects with the band. If you have two guitars, a loud drummer, and a bass
player, using a fat flanged or chorused sound will sound like mud-hard to
cut through the mix. Think Hendrix or the Who-bass drums and effected
guitar.Beck's O Delay has some nice ultra distorted harp-just make some room
for it.That being said also remember that a lot of Hendrix's most tripped
out stuff was just him, his guitar, and a Marshall stack(well a little
lighter fluid too)-check out the Monteray Pop video.
I do most of the Space Animals synth programming. If you want your harp to
sound like a synth, keep the sound simple. A synthesizer plays a basic sound
wave, usually run through a filter to knock off even more overtones. You can
stack all these sounds on top of each other and it sounds great at home, but
live it sounds awful.Listen to Bernie Worrel's stuff with Parliament-nice
treble, in your face riffs, cut like a knife. His bass playing is
extrodinary.
Don't forget we're playing music which means use your ears.If the harp
doesn't fit the song, no matter how cool it sounds, it's in the way. Simple
usually is better-check out Pink Floyd, the Talking Heads, A3, Counting
Crowes or Beck. Yeah there's a lot of wild stuff going on, but a lot of
space too.
