Re: PBS blues documentary



I agree that as a documentary it falls short of being comprehensive, but
there would have to be at least 100 episodes to do that successfully. What I
did like was that the segments gave attention to musicians like Blind Willie
Johnson, Skip James, and JB Lenoir instead of just focusing on those
musicians who normally get the lion's share of the footage like Muddy and BB
King. JB in particular had a surprising amount of footage. I also liked that
they involved the behind the scenes giants like Sam Philips and Len Chess
(personality "warts" and all).
Considering that most programs about the blues tend to go for the easy draw
to an uninformed public I thought the treatment did a fair job of including
something for aficionados as well as Joe Public.It has it's shortcomings
(the whole "Chuck D meets meets Electric Mud" slant seemed a bit of a reach)
but overall I thought it had a better balance between entertainment and
documentary than I expected.

...and yeah, Sonny sucked a harp sideways!

Now if we could just get someone to do a whole series about harmonica
players.
