Pricing
I charged $20/diatonic to tune and regulate. Of course, some turned this down
with the old "but the harmonica only cost me $24" mind set, but players that
appreciate the upgrade in quality in their harmonicas came back for more.
At first it took a good hour, but with experience and confidence, this time
shortened.
$20/hr is reasonable for a qualified technician, and is indeed less than that
of an electrician/plumber/mechanic/piano technician etc.
You must be comfortable asking for a fair return for your time and expertise.
Ultimately, you may become so good that you can whip this work out quickly,
but if the quality remains consistant, the $20 charge per diatonic is
reasonable.
Also, different parts of the country have varying cost comfort levels. For
example, when I lived in Detroit, I easily charged $80 to tune a piano.
Moving to Orlando, FL, I found that the average rate here is between $50 and
$70, with technicians undercutting each other's prices in order to get the
work. Therefore, I (reluctantly) made adjustments in my pricing structure to
suit the area.
