Re: Other instruments harp-l'ers play

hey all,

like Hash, i started on trumpet, waaaay back before
highschool. i dug it, but hated marchin band music so
i quit. dad took the horn back to hock, end of story.
i got a keyboard, but never learned to play
anything but some Star Wars theme music.
the blues o'ertook me when i was about 17 thanks to
Stevie Ray Vaughn, and soon after i discovered the
harp. it was the only time i ever heard an instrument
and felt a connection to it. i started playing at
about 21, but didn't dig in until very recently.
i've never had a strong yen to play another
instrument, but i was given a guitar as a gift, which
i'm learning to play in order to accompany harpers, or
even myself. same story with percussion instruments (i
own bongos, and would like a 'cajon'.) i'd like to
pick up piano, for reasons of music theory and
chording, and i am also learning to play the 'cuatro',
which is a folk guitar from Puerto Rico that's kind of
like an oversized mandolin. i love the sound -- even
cool for blues -- but it doesn't call me to play it
like the harp does.
if i could sing, that would be the nearest thing
to me to harp playing.
i do think of myself as playing more than one
instrument though (or, i will), espcially when i
consider the difference in playing diatonic and
chromatic harps (outside of 3rd pos.) i recently
ordered a diminished tuned chromatic and i'm looking
at is as a whole new bag. if i can pick up bass harp
before i die, i'll be happy ;)
