Hi JP
If you take the distance between the notes c and d for instance, it is a
second up.
If you go the other way though - from d up to c, it's a minor seven.
Likewise c to e is a major third, but e upwards to c is a minor sixth.
So the circle of fifths clockwise goes up - if you go counterclock it turns
into a circle of fourths.
