I understand completely what you say. I was formally trained on the trumpet
but play the diatonic by ear only. I just got a Hering 7148 and a basic
method book and am now learning to read on the chromatic! My progress is
accelerating very quickly because of my previous training and I am very
excited that in time I will be reading more complex charts on the C chrom
like I can with brass instruments. At that point I will try another key of
chrom! I figure that by the time I have become comfortable with reading on a
few keys of chrom I will then be able to read on the diatonic as well. If
not, then I can work the chart out on chrom (I'm a real good sight reader
on brass) and then play it on diatonic.
