To me, Tone is multifaceted and therefore not generally definable.
Players with good tone exhibit a control and understanding of dynamics
by which they readily apply the appropriate tonal values to riffs,
phrases, solos and whole songs. The effect on the listeners is to more
fully feel that they relate to what the musician is expressing. It can
be rough and gravelly, thin and delicate, steady or wavering... but the
truth in the music shines out if the tone fits.
The musicians I most admire constantly and fluidly adjust their tone to
enhance the musical experience.
