Jazz player, Max Geldray (Max van Gelder) was born in Amsterdam on
this day in 1916. Geldray began playing professionally in the early =
30's. First as lead player of an octet then squeezing it down to a =
quartet "The Hollander Boys" to tour Great Britain.
Played with Ray Ventura and Django Reinhardt when living in France.=20
On the sleeve of the LP "Djangology 8", on which Larry Adler plays 4 =
tracks, it shows Max as the harmonica player, not Larry Adler. (a fine =
piece for a collector)
He Joined the Dutch Army when he fled from France to England just before =
the outbreak of the 2nd World War.
During the war he played in theatres and BBC radio and was wounded =
during the invasion on the Normandy coast in 1944.
He went back to play for Ventura again before settling down in Britain =
where he joined the famous "Goon Show."
