hi, Alec,

i am maniacally answering this, even though:

1) i hate taxes
2) i pay taxes
3) i am no tax expert

i would say it is irrelevant that the club sent you 1099's late.
you still need to report, you still need to file.

once - many years ago, i did an architecture gig in the beginning of
the year, and forgot completely about it. i never got a 1099, but
the firm
filed -- and had me listed. the IRS came to me. of course, i
understood
immediately what happened, and the jig was up -- the IRS didn't give me
too much hassle, just pay, which i did.

not getting your AMEX bill or any other bill in the mail on time, i have
learned
(the hard way) doesn't excuse you for not paying -- you know
you owe,
regardless of the postal service or others that may cause the delay of
your doc.s.

i would say that your friend can file an amendment. you should
only
pay on the $800, not the $3,200, of course. the club should
re-issue
your 1099.. failing that, i would write it an explanation on your
IRS form.
do you have any back-up in the form of check stubs? did the
club
pay you $3,200 or did each of you get $800? if you got the
$3200,
do you have check stubs or something showing that you paid your
pals $800 each?

finally -- i gotta ask.. .. .. .. ..
you didn't get that amount for only one club date, did you??

harp content ps--don't forget to play Mike Steven's the Taxman Boogie
