Barcelona/Damien Masterson

hey all,

well, i went to Barcelona. beautiful city. cheap wine. i didn't look into
the music scene as much as i should have before i left, but i did show at a
club called the Jamboree (their flyer had a picture of a guy who may or may
not have been playing a harmonica...). there was a blues band playing the
night i showed up, but unfortunately i've forgotten their name. the lead
singer is also the bass player (five string bass). they were pretty good, i
especially dug the piano/organ player. well, after a couple of numbers they
called up a harmonica player, some guy they introduced as Damien "El Hijo
del Diablo" (the Son of the Devil). he was a chromatic player, but followed
along solidly in every key and took wild solos. as i found out later, the
guy was San Fran native Damien Masterson, who has more than a little
experience playing harp in both a blues and a latin context. anyway, from
what i could tell the guy was good. he sounded kind of like Toots Thielmans
inspired by Jimi Hendrix. he played just one chromatic the whole time i saw
him (in C??) but he used double stops and 2-hole shakes, and i think a few
bends. no 3rd pos. stuff though, that i could tell. i wish i'd gotten a
chance to say hi, but couldn't stay all night (those Barcelonians party way
way late). if you get a chance to see this guy play, i'd recommend it. or
check out his website, he has sound clips. (i don't have the address, just
look it up via google...)
oh, and thanks to all those people who e-mailed me with tips on where to
go and who to see. if i'd been there longer, or asked sooner, i might have
caught more music, but as it was, it was an awesome trip. thanks again,

                --Jp
