I've known some alcoholics and drug addicts and this whole post is
consistent with my experience. To me all of Walter's hard luck can be
thought of a alcohol related. The drunks I know have all kinds of terrible
things happen to them, mostly because they are drunk and not looking out for
their own self interest.
One thing we have today that we didn't have in Little Walters time is that
the courts require people to get help. I've known a few who turned around
because the went to AA in prison or because they went to AA instead of
prison.
