I would like to introduce a device that seems to be little known in the
harp world but is a fantastic little effects box called a BOSS AD-3.It's an
acoustic instrument processor and works great with harp.It has a two band
EQ,high(6.3kHz) and a low(100Hz) which just happens to be at the top and
bottom of the freq. response of a Shure magnetic element for all you green
bullet users. It also has a 2X2 chorus, fully adjustable from just a touch to
alot, and a fantastic reverb that sounds incredibly like a spring reverb, also
fully adjustable. On top of that,it has an anti feedback circuit that can be
set manually,or used on auto with the click of a foot switch when acoustic
feedback pops in while you're playing. They can be used together ,both at once
as well.It has an input level adjustment as well and a peak LED that blinks
at 6db below clipping so you know when its peaking out.It has two inputs, one
in a straight line input and the other is a G-amp simulator, which is designed
to make acoustic guitar sound more natural when playing amplified.I don't use
that input much but it seems to mellow out the tone. Its powered by 6 AA
batteries or an AC adapter.I've been using mine for a couple years now and
everyone I let try it is quite impressed. It can also be used to run straight
into a PA or other balanced device. The chorus is turned on and off by means
of a foot switch. The reverb and EQ adjustments are done with knobs on the
unit. This device can really fatten up your sound of mellow it right out with
the EQ settings, and can add some really nice effects with the reverb and
chorus.A very versitile little unit,about 6X6 in. and about 1.5 in. high.Fits
nicely on top of a larger size amp like a bassman RI. I haven't seen many
around at the music stores but I believe they're still available.Retail is
somewhere around $150.There's also a BOSS AD-5,which has a four band EQ and
inputs for magnetis mics or other mics with XLR inputs. It has the same
features as the AD-3 with a few more bells and whistles.I haven't tried one
but I imagine its even better than the AD-3 for harp. Its slightly larger
too, about 9X6 I'd say.I would recomend that anyone give one a try if you
happen to find one at your local music store or where ever it is you get your
supplies.I think you'll be quite impressed!............Dave
