The Jerry Murad Harmonicats are still active. Jerry on lead, George Miklas on
bass, and Al Data on chord. Jerry and George live in the Youngstown area, Al
Data lives in Pennsylvania.
Just thought I'd add some Don Les lore. After leaving the "Cats" @ 1984, Don
teamed with Mildred Mulcay and a young chord player (can't remember name).
Mildred played lead chromatic (and a fine player she is). Don played bass with
this group (The Don Les Harmonicats) and I think was the last time he played
bass, at least publicly. Don became known as one of the best jazz diatonic
harmonica players around. (IMHO ~THE~ best!). He can be heard (rarely) on some
of the old Harmonicat's recordings - "Harmonicats Boogie" comes to mind. He
later teamed up with Mo Vint, who played foot pedal bass & chord simultaneously
- Don played diatonic, which was, I think, his real harmonica love. The 2 tape
set mentioned many times on this list was of this latter group, again called
The Don Les Harmonicats. He never picked up a bass again as far as I know, and
never missed it, he said. Don was re-recording/mixing this tape in the studio
when he died - no one seems to know whether we will see this re-release - I
think the intent was to come out with a CD. -- What am I going to do at SPAH
this year - I'll miss the 2:?? A.M. hotel lobby bull sessions with Don. :'(
