Re: Compilation CD BWH or ST

Sorry Harv but that's not the same Big Walter of harmonica playing fame.
Collectables is a less than honorable record label often reported to have
released material without the artist's permission or knowledge. Texas
harmonica greats being a prime example of the poor quality that typifies
this label. A Mr. Roy C. Ames is the producer and "owner" of most of
this material. I'm told he often finds himself the target of legal
action and is a convicted felon to boot. Several lengthy but interesting
articles concerning this subject have been reprinted on the Blues-l and
are no doubt "available in an archive search". :)

There is a new Big Walter Horton release though. The Memphis recordings
are available on a Sun Records release through Charly. Several alternate
takes and unreleased cuts appear on this compilation. The previously
mentioned Hot Shot Love also appears with different versions of his Wolf
Call Boggie along with several other tunes. Basicaly this is an expanded
version of Sun Harmonica Greats with unreleased material from earlier
recording dates. I'm being unwilling to walk across the room and look at
the CD to give a more complete reporting but for Big Walter fans this one
is worth having. If you liked Sun Harmonica Greats buy it. FJM
