on 4th/5th position: I've been messing with "Harlem Nocturne" this week
and I this it sounds best (for me) in 5ht position.

For Larry Adler/Toots fans - They are at the Montreal Jazz Festival
                             July 1.

On improving/rule breaking - I always like the adage (I think I got
it from Jaime Abersold although he may not have coined it),
you have to first know the rules and then break them. As a
result, my opinion is a little contrary to those expressed
through this thread. I try to do every tune (as close as
possible) like the original artist as a first phase of learning.
When I'm content my best approximation of the tune, then
I try to give it my own twist, with the original intermixed
with my own ideas. During practice, I try to do it both ways
because I find that even years later, my best approximation
was short a few diddles. I'm not professing this as THE
way, but just one more opinion that works for me.
