While I have nothing to say regarding the use of a mic sheild from Radip 
Shack (if it works for you great) I will say that turning the tone 
controls to zero on any Fender Tube Amp cuts the input signal 
considerably.  It would be hard to get any drive this way.  2 is just 
about the point on most Fender amps where the tone control is on but not 
doing much of anything to the sound.  Fender tone controls subtract 
rather than add tone. When you have them all the way up that's how the 
amp would sound without tone controls at all.  Still if it works for you
