Re: Chromatic scale in top 4 holes?
There's lots on this is in the archives, but since nobody else jumped on
this yet (oops, I see Chris M. has, oh well, here's a little more) -- to
get the chromatic scale on a Richter diatonic in the upper register, for
example in the key of C:
Note Action - Hole number - how much
---- --------------------------------
C Blow 7
C#/Db Overdraw 7, or Bend Draw 8 a 1/2 step if valved*
D Draw 8
D#/Eb Blow Bend 8, 1/2 step
E Blow 8
F Draw 9
F#/Gb Blow Bend 9, 1/2 step
G Blow 9
G#/Ab Overdraw 9, or Bend Draw 10 a 1/2 step if valved*
A Draw 10
A#/Bb Blow Bend 10, full step
B Blow Bend 10, 1/2 step
C Blow 10
Bending is always lowering the reed note; overdrawing is always raising the
opposite reed note. For more information, search the Harmonigopher, all
dates, but 1994 was particularly prolific on this subject.
* Mike Curtis has stated that the Suzuki Promaster, a valved diatonic, does
not have valves on these notes anymore, so to do it you have to glue on
your own. Recent chatter on the list indicates that Hohner, the usual
source, is not so willing to sell in bulk anymore, so finding a new source
may be a problem if you want to use valves. Some harmonica repair folks
may know more (eg. Dick Gardner).
