I always use a foam wind cover on my Beyer M260 ribbon--it's almost a
necessity with this mic.  The old saying "never blow into a microphone" was
written for ribbon mics, I think.  Besides the possibility of damaging the
ribbon (although I suspect the M260 is less fragile than many), you can hear
the ribbon bottoming out (or whatever is happening inside) with a loud
thump.  The wind cover minimizes this problem.

I don't use one on the EV N/D857 I use sometimes.  It has a good enough
windscreen built into the mic.

Never tried one on my Shure or Astatic bullet mics, but I don't play those
all that much.
