I don't think there are any set rules. I often, regardless of venue size,
use a Gibson Discoverer which has about 8W. It has to be miked. I use this
in conjunction with a rack mount pre-amp/effects unit depending on the
sound I want. I'm not a real purist/traditionalist though. I also have a
home-made, rack-mount, 4-stage(2-12AX7's) pre-amp that gets an incredibly
wonderful sound. With that many stages it can go from a slight tube
coloring to total grit.

Many of the rack mount pre-amps are tube.
