I lost FJM's post on the $125 earplugs, but they sell two less expensive
versions from Musician's Friend (1-800-776-5173; 60 day MBG !!):  Sonic II
Sound Filters for $9 and earWear ER-20 Hi-FI Earplugs for $15.  I guess I'd
try these first.
