RE: SM57's (was amp mics)

I've been lead singing/harp playing around 16 years and have used
both the SM57 and SM58. My final choice was the SM57.

I use my SM57 for singing and 2 mics for the harp. I keep my SM57
on a gooseneck boom stand and sing (while I play my keys). I then
pick up my harp and play with the harp on the stand. (I also use
a Green Bullet when I'm only playing harp on a song and can walk away
from my keyboards.)

I've also found that if you have small hands like me the SM57 is
easier to hold than the SM58--all you guys must have large hands :-)

Having a high vocal range and a mic'ed harp, you have to be careful
with feedback by pulling back the highs on the EQ. (I have a separate
12-band EQ for just my mic and I run the sound so I can make immediate
adjustments). Doing this with the SM57 gave me a good clean sound.
But the SM58 lost too many highs and I lost volume and tone.

The harper/singers with lower vocal ranges would probably find the
SM58 a better mic to use. Your mileage may vary.
