VIBRATO
I WAS LOOKING THROUGH SOME OF THE HARP-L ARCHIVES AND SAW A NUMBER OF
POSTINGS ON THE DIFFERENT WAYS TO ACHIEVE VIBRATO, ESPECIALLY ON THE
BENT NOTES. ONE METHOD I DIDN'T SEE MENTIONED WAS USING THE JAW, WHICH
WAS TAUGHT TO ME BY JOE FILISKO, IF ANY OF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH HIM.
THIS INVOLVES ACHIEVING THE BENT NOTE AND THEN RAISING AND LOWERING
YOUR JAW QUICKLY TO WAVER THE NOTE. GRANTED IT TAKES A VERY RELAXED
MOUTH TO DO THIS SMOOTHLY, BUT JUST WORKING ON IT HAS IMPROVED MY TONE
TREMENDOUSLY. THE RESULTING VIBRATO IS MUCH SMOOTHER AND DEEPER THAN I
THINK IS ACHIEVABLE USING A TONGUE FLUTTER.
THE OTHER THING THAT WORKS FOR ME IS TO TONGUE BLOCK THE NOTE, VAMPING
MY TONGUE ON AND OFF THE HARP. FOR SOME REASON IT SEEMS TO ALLOW ME TO
GET A GREAT SOUNDING VIBRATO, ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT SUSTAINABLE FOR VERY
LONG.
I'D LOVE TO HEAR ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS PEOPLE HAVE ON ACHEIVING GOOD
VIBRATO, BOTH ON BENT AND UNBENT NOTES. OR PERHAPS AN ARTICLE IN HIP
WOULD BE POSSIBLE THAT ACCUMULATES A LOT OF THE SUGGESTIONS HERE. BY
THE WAY, WHEN IS THE NEXT ISSUE OF HIP EXPECTED TO COME OUT. I HAVE
BEEN EAGERLY AWAITING IT. JUST CURIOUS?
