Rusty,

I own both those models.  I like the gold plated CX12 better than the black
model.  I think the sound of the Hering 3 octave harmonica is nice.  Plus, it
is a lot cheaper than the CX12.  I would suggest that you first purchase the
4 octave Hering  model for about $67.00 from Richard Farrell.   I will send
you some info about The Harmonica Educator newsletter, and lessons for the
chromatic harmonica via cassette tapes.
