Re: Whoops



Well, there's whooping and whooping. Sonny Terry often would just take
his mouth off the harp and whoop, in rhythm with whatever he was
playing -- it's actually quite astonishing how he could mix in these
amazingly fast rhythms on the harp with the whooping and hollering and
make it sound seamless. "Sonny's Squall" on the MIDNIGHT SPECIAL
double has some nice examples of this, I think. That's a great album
to start with in any case.

There's also a kind of moaning sound that Van Morrison uses a lot --
he's not a particularly brilliant harp player but he's competent, and
he gets a strange sound out of a harp by drawing and bending and at
the same time vocalizing. Kind of like moaning through the harp if
that makes any sense. I've never heard anyone else do it like that --
does anyone know what I mean. I'll try to cite some examples of it.
