Re: [Harp-L] Little Walter is overrated

To be fair, a couple of LW's contemporaries, the slightly older Walter Horton and Rhythm Willie, were monster players in their own right.

Of course it is, as with all art, a matter of taste, but it must be remembered what the harp playing was like at Little Walter's time. When I listen to the other old time "greats", I'm considerably more impressed with all that is Little Walter, tone, style and ability. If you want to compare him to contemporary harp players, consider B.B.King as compared to Joe Bonamassa. Modern musicians have pushed the boundaries of their instruments incredibly and I do appreciate their skill, but in my humble opinion, in blues, a single bent note with a sweet vibrato speaks volumes. I am always amazed and impressed with the wonderful harmonica playing I hear online, but my ears still perk up when a Little Walter song is played on Sirius' Bluesville station!
