Re: [Harp-L] Re: Totally bored with the blues genre

If we're just talking blues here (not harp players) then add Joe Bonamassa
to your list.
I love how he mixes other genres into the Blues. Some of his blues has a
folky feel, some has a jazz feel, some is just the ole gritty blues, but
there is variation and diversity in his music.

I'm still a pretty green player, but I enjoy trying my hand at different
styles. A week ago I got the chance to meet and hear Howard Levy play with
our own Cedar Rapids Jazz band. Wow! Talk about diversity! On one of his
CD he plays an India style song, on harp that uses a scale not used in
western music. Some might know the official explanation. :-)

I think we miss something in the art when we limit to hard rules. Creative
music is all about breaking the rules.

I was listening to NPR last week, and there was a discussion about the
Blues being foundational in its raw form.
Then he said, you can't have Jazz without the blues. "Jazz is like blues
with a bunch of extra stuff added on top."
I thought that was an interesting observation.
