Well, it is repetitive to some point as long as you consider 
"patterns". The Blues is not in the patterns though, it's betwen the 
notes. The feeling, the hardly noticible deviations and variations of 
the patterns, the storytelling.
Considering that, there is a wide open field of possibilities playing 
the Blues and even when repeating patterns you can tell different 
things all the time.
I admit that audiences used to hear broadway show-tunes probably don't 
have their "antennas" well tuned to receive these things.
