[Harp-L] why like jazz?

I found this on a search of "why americans like jazz", and, after all the links to the opposite, where the consensus lies, and I found this...

I looked because, I, myself, don't know why I like jazz, but I do. Always have since I was given an alto sax in sixth grade, and heard Charlie Parker .......It's not at all important to know WHY, for sure.

I have some friends, harmonica folk, such as Dick Gardner, who has worked on Toots' horns, but doesn't "Get" his playing, but does, of course, recognize the high degree of skill involved. Like when my parents dragged me thru The Fancy Museums of Europe, at age 13, and I could understand the skill involved, and appreciate the skill, but the artwork left me cold... I may give the Mona Lisa a second shot if I ever visit France again....I've read that quite a few people appreciate it. Go figure.

I just tried to listen to some Toots from the viewpoint of "geesh what the heck IS this stuff?", and with a tiny bit of effort, could see it from the "I hate jazz" viewpoint....a bunch of meaningless notes ....that felt weird to me....

I quickly switched back to listening and NOT asking questions about why I like it, and was far happier.

player of music, mostly written by dead people and played on a toy that everybody's Uncle except my nephew's has the good sense to keep safely out of sight in a drawer.
